1 in 4 adults in the EU drank no alcohol at all in 2019... but what about 2020?

Well, now...

According to a study conducted by Eurostat, about a quarter of adults (26.2% to be exact) drank no alcohol at all in 2019. While it's perhaps no surprise that 40% of non-drinkers were aged 75 and over, I was astonished to find out just 1% of young people (15-24) drank on a daily basis.

By contrast, it appears that while it is true that nearly half of the population aged 75+ didn't drink at all, the other half tried to compensate by drinking every day: when it comes to daily consumption by age, people aged 75+ take the crown with 16%.

Men drank a lot more than women on a daily basis (13% vs 4.1%) as well as on a weekly basis (1 in 3 vs 1 in 5). Interestingly, there seems to be no tangible connection between daily, weekly and monthly intakes.

Portugal, for example, took the top spot for the highest daily intake (20.7%) but only ranked 17th when it came to 'heavy episodic drinking' (Denmark is at no. 1 with 38% of the population).

BUT, and it's a big 'but', this was 2019, and I'm pretty sure the results for 2020 will look substantially different because... well, come on, we all know why. I'm certainly curious to find out as soon as Eurostat shares the new study.

  • I'm in Denmark now. So maybe I start an epic drinking night the coming two weeks.
