3 reasons why cheesecake is the most underrated dessert

Overall, I think cheesecake is underrated because we tend to forget about it ā€“ Lord knows why ā€“ but it happens. Think back to when you were last eating out (feels like an eternity), to when the waiter/waitress handed you the dessert menu. How many of us, realistically, went straight for the chocolate brownie, sticky toffee pudding, sorbet, apple crumble or any other great option, instead of a cheesecake? Yep, exactly.

So may I present to you three important reasons why cheesecakes are the best dessert ever.

(1) Cheesecake is delicious and the choices are endless

Now, each to their own and whatnot and I get that, but upon reflection, there are SO MANY different types and flavours of cheesecakes, that I would almost challenge anyone that says they dislike ALL kinds of cheesecake.

There are so many types and flavours: chocolate, strawberry, mango (or ANY fruit really), Bailey's, Ferrero Rocher, Oreo, Nutella... the list goes on and on. However, just wanted to give a shout-out to one of the definitive types: the New York Cheesecake. So simply, yet so tasty.

If you are not sure whether you like it or are not too big of a fan, give it a second chance... Start off with New York cheesecake and then move on to a type/flavour of your choice. But bake it yourself if you can. I guarantee you will probably like at least one of them!

(2) Cheesecake is surprisingly easy to bake

I often get asked quite inquisitively how I made 'x' cheesecake and that's followed by "well, I wouldn't know where to begin". Honestly, take the word of an amateur cook: they are dead-easy to make. The New York Cheesecake, for instance, is essentially baked in three steps. (1) form biscuit base, (2) mix a handful of basic ingredients together and (3) bake it. That really is all that it takes. Even easier, find one you don't need to bake. Then you've only got two steps.

Give that a try first, just carefully follow the recipe. Then, venture out to make a flavour of your choice. I baked a few Bailey's cheesecakes earlier this year, for an extended family get-together and my goodness were they a faff and a half to bake - very detailed recipe and lots of steps to follow. BUT, the end result was some amazing feedback, which is what it's all about, right?

(3) Usually, cheesecake is an instant and unexpected crowd-pleaser

Here's another thing. Whether at a (future) dinner party or a gathering at the office, any dessert that's brought in is usually a cake, pie, crumble etc. of some sort and of course the instant expectation is that it will be delicious. And it usually is. But cheesecakes? For some reason I find the expectation is set quite low. But, it's bound to go down a storm. Why? Well, they are usually a neutral dessert that caters to most palates and they don't have to be overly rich, therefore they are light and satisfying. So when they try your delicious home-baked cheesecake, it tends to be the Star of the Show. And I think it's down to the element of surprise.

  • You're utterly correct. In fact I generally spurn the toffee puddings and tiramisus for a slab of cheesecake. When my fish and chips at the British Museum were whisked back to the kitchen for being translucent, and I was offered whatever I wanted up to half the kingdom, I asked for the cheesecake.

  • You are absolutely right about cheesecake being very easy to bake! One of the fancier cheesecakes I made is a Tequila Rose cheesecake.
