5 weird and wonderful food hybrids

Whoever thought to combine peanut butter and marmite is a genius

You've probably heard of the cronut and the cruffin. Now it's time to fire up your toasters — the latest food innovation in the UK is one of the most unexpected of hybrids: Marmite Peanut Butter.

The spread – unsurprisingly a combination of crunchy peanut butter and the yeasty taste of Marmite – is the first permanent product innovation since the love-it-or-hate-it brand was established in 1902.

It has understandably received rather mixed reviews on social media reinforcing Marmite's power as a brand to successfully split a room in seconds.

Food hybrids, or "mutant foods," as they're also known have been turning heads — and stomachs — for years, and the food craze is showing no signs of stopping.

From sushi burritos to donut bacon cheeseburgers if you don't think the world has gone mad yet, you will after reading this list of the strangest culinary combos out there. Are they as controversial as this nutty spread? Hint — yes.

The good response to Marmite peanut butter...

The not so good response...

Be sure to tell us if you have tried any of these and what your verdict was — good or bad!

Sushi burrito

The sushi burrito was grown in popularity over the years mainly because it's basically an inoffensive mash-up: The rice stays the rice. But the pork becomes the salmon, and the salsa becomes soy sauce. It's nothing more than an over-sized maki roll, and who doesn't want a big fist full of sushi for lunch?

Hai Street Kitchen originated in Philadelphia, but now holds two locations in New York and offers five sushi burrito flavours: Slammin’ Salmon, Akami Tuna, Hai Street Chicken, Ho-Lee Shrimp, Flamin’ Tuna, ranging between $11 to $15. In the UK head to Cha Cha Roll in London's Soho. The website makes things clear: "where the burrito meets sushi," perfect!

Ramen burger

Invented by Japanese-American chef Keizo Shimamoto in 2013, the ramen burger is one of the most famous food hybrids to hit the market. The tasty sandwich debuted at the Smorgasburg outdoor food market in Brooklyn, New York, and has been a staple at the food festival ever since purely for the novelty value.

The craze spread to the UK quick sharp and note you can visit Pimp My Ramen a firm fixture at Greenwich Food Market, in London every weekend. They offer interpretations including a pulled pork ramen burger and chicken teriyaki ramen burger as well as the classic.

The Luther burger

If you love burgers but you have a particularly aggressive sweet tooth this hybrid is perfect for you. Beware, it may come as no surprise, this glazed donut bacon cheeseburger can range between 800 and 1,500 calories depending where you order it.

Krispy Kreme launched it's own donut cheeseburger: the "Dog Days Doughnut Burger" and KFC has also begun selling a donut fried chicken sandwich in select locations. It was originally named "The Luther Burger" after R&B singer Luther Vandross and has its own Wikipedia page.

Doritos Locos Tacos

Now with three flavours, Taco Bell's Doritos Locos Tacos continue to be insanely popular and introduced the the best selling item to London for just one-day last year.

Combining a Doritos chip shell, meat, cheese, iceberg lettuce, and sour cream, the latest mystery flavour was Flamas after the success of Cool Ranch and Nacho Cheese. The company says it has become “the most popular product in the Mexican-inspired brand’s 50-year history.”
