Alcohol companies are stepping up and making hand sanitizer

Some of them are even donating the sanitizer to people in need

We’re all finding different ways to manage our stress and anxiety in the uncertainty of the coronavirus pandemic. Some are meditating, some are baking, and others are taking the edge off with a cocktail.

But while a drink can be a good way to, uh, keep the spirits up (sorry, couldn’t resist), alcohol companies are recognising that there’s probably something we need more than booze right now: hand sanitizer.

A number of companies are making hand sanitizer instead of spirits, in order to meet the urgent need for the product.

Pernod Ricard USA, Bacardi, Amber Beverage Group (ABG), BrewDog and Corby Spirit and Wine Limited are among the companies shifting their production to help with the international shortages of sanitizer.

Bacardi has teamed up with Puerto Rico-based Olein Refinery to provide raw materials that will reportedly enable the production of more than 1.7 million units of 10oz sanitizer.

The ethanol needed to make the 70% alcohol sanitizers is being produced at the Bacardi Corporation distillery in Cataño, Puerto Rico, according to Food Bev Media. That location is where over 80% of the company’s rums are made.

Meanwhile Pernod Ricard USA will be using all its manufacturing sites and distilleries to make hand sanitizer.

Ann Mukherjee, chairman and CEO of Pernod Ricard North America, said: “Our company is proud to support the efforts of the administration and communities across the country in fighting the Covid-19 pandemic. In times like this it is important that everyone, especially companies with strong US roots, like ours, prioritise good corporate citizenship and step up in the name of the greater good. I am glad that we were able to form this public/private partnership and repurpose our spirits production facilities to meet a pressing, national need.”

Several companies are donating all or a portion of the sanitizer they produce to individuals in need and local agencies.

  • The bars are closed- we do not meet our friends and families- not the right feeling to drink cocktails 🍹. So let them produce sanitizer now and after this bad dream is over, we say: cheers 🍻 and drink the vodka (cocktails) with our friends and families. A good idea.
