Is it just us, or do you get a bit sick of roast dinner-esque foods at Christmas? It seems for seven days straight, you have turkey, or roast beef, or leftovers, or a combination of all of the above.

We always end up craving some extra flavour, and a bit of spice. Basically, this Currywurst recipe will hit the spot.

As sausage stans far and wide will know, Volkswagen (yes the car company) has been producing stellar sausages for over 45 years now. In fact, it produces and sells more sausages than it does cars – as Richard Hammond found out when he visited the factory earlier this year.

We've cooked this little treat up on the Tefal OptiGrill Elite, so you know you'll end up with some banging bangers.   • 4 Weisswurst or VW currywurst sausages
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1 onion
  • 400g tomato pulp
  • 2 tbsp balsamic vinegar
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp curry powder
  • Salt


  1. Heat the oil in a saucepan, add the chopped onion and 1 tsp of salt. Cook for five minutes before adding the tomato pulp, vinegar, sugar, Worcestershire sauce and curry powder. Let it simmer for the time it takes to cook the sausages.
  2. Turn on the Tefal OptiGrill. Select the manual programme at 210C and press ok.
  3. As. soon as preheating is complete, put the sausages on the grill and close the lid. Press OK and set the cooking time to 10 minutes.
  4. Serve the sausages with the curry sauce, and some chips if you fancy.
