Another celeb booze brand: Kendall Jenner launches 818 Tequila

Another great tequila to add to the mix, or another underwhelming celebrity launch that robs smaller local businesses of their profits?

Silencing the rumours on social media, Kendall Jenner recently took to Instagram to confirm to her 152-million followers that she is the brain behind the new startup tequila brand, 818 Tequila.

She said, “[for] almost 4 years [she's] been on a journey to create the best tasting tequila. after dozens of blind taste tests, trips to [their] distillery, entering into world tasting competitions anonymously and WINNING...3.5 years later [she] think[s] [they’ve] done it! this is all [they’ve] been drinking for the last year and [she] can’t wait for everyone else to get their hands on this to enjoy it as much as [they] do! @drink818 coming soon”.

Described as "hand-crafted tequila from Jalisco, Mexico" on its Instagram page, 818 Tequila is the latest business venture to join the slew of operations that are run by the Kardashian-Jenner clan, and a first for Kendall - marking her foray into the world of alcohol & spirits. She also isn't the first celebrity to join the spirits world, rather following the lead of people like Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, Ryan Reynolds, Post Malone, George Clooney, among many, many others.

The range includes three variations: 818 Blanco, 818 Reposado and 818 Añejo, each produced in small batches (allegedly) and bottled at 40% ABV. The tequilas are also made from 100% Agave Azul, in Jalisco, Mexico.

The bottles are yet to be available for purchase. However, this hasn't stopped the 818 Reposado and 818 Añejo variations from being included as some of the best in the World Tequila Awards 2020.

As it so happens, not everyone was quite so thrilled with the news.

Many people have shared their opinions on the release, stating that the model has "zero knowledge on Mexican culture", and sees this as an opportunity to simply create profit. Some have also claimed that her brand is an example of "cultural appropriation", by profiting off the Mexican culture whilst damaging smaller, family-owned Mexican tequila businesses.

Others have also shared alternatives to Kendall's tequila brand, which include small, family-owned local businesses in Mexico, such as Tanteo Tequila, Azuñia Tequila, Angelisco Tequila, and Real Zepeda Tequila.
