Baked Bean crimes are becoming an increasing concern

A TikTok trend called "beaning", involving emptying cans of baked beans on other peoples' doorsteps, has got out of control!

All sorts of weird pranks have developed over time. It's a fact of life that kids and teenagers (and quite a few adults as well!) will latch onto basically any kind of whacky practical jokes to amuse themselves. The latest of those seems to be the bizarre phenomenon of beaning. This prank (which involves pouring baked beans onto other peoples doorsteps, driveways or cars) originated as a TikTok trend through the hashtag #beanbandits and it's got so out of control that the police have had to get involved!

Police have now started advising shops to stay on the lookout for teens who might be buying up large quantities of baked beans to become #beanbandits themselves. "It has come to the attention of the police that a new trend has started by groups of youths called 'beaning'," said the West Yorkshire Police in a public statement. "This involves youths throwing the contents of a can of beans over properties, very similar to the trend of throwing eggs at properties. If you work in a shop, please can you be aware of youths buying large quantities of cans of beans, if you have children living at home, please be mindful if you see them removing cans of beans from the family home."

The West Yorkshire Police's statement came after an appeal was issued by police in Surrey last month in the wake of a spate of beanings in the small village of Wonersh. One image released by the police there in the appeal showed four empty cans of baked beans left lying around near a doorstep, with a small amount of individual beans still inside. Another image showed a villager's car covered in baked beans.

Obviously, beaning isn't going to be viewed favourably by everyone. Whilst it might seem like a bit of harmless fun most of the time, it's not great when your own car ends up being trashed by some opportunistic beaners! Hopefully people can get a handle on going overboard with the practical joke before any more serious consequences happen as a result.
