- Why is my breakfast a heap....

Baked beans at breakfast - it's just not right!

I'm a bit obsessed about traditional food I admit but i just don't understand when beans snook in at breakfast...

This weekend I found myself having an unexpected night in a high class country house hotel where you presumably go for the traditional English food experience.

To my horror this is what they served.

Traditional English breakfast began in the 13th Century appearing at first in the country homes of the gentry.

Baked beans were invented in America and only started to be sold here in 1904 so when and why did they sneak into breakfasts?

I don't remember seeing them appear at breakfast until about five years ago and I suspect it is a money saving padder.

Don't get me wrong I think baked beans are a marvellous thing - I just wish they would go away at breakfast and take their rightful place as baked beans on toast and lurking around at BBQ's.

What do you think about beans for brekky - do you love it or loathe it?

  • I've seen them at breakfast since the fifties, that'sa bit longer than five years ago. A 'full English' should be 1) Half a grapefruit, 2) cereal and milk, 3) fried eggs, sausages, bacon, black pudding, mushrooms, fried bread, and as long as I can remember, has always included beans and/or tomatoes but NOT hash browns. 4) Toast and marmalade, (not jam). PS The fry-up should be cooked in lard and not oil! (Picture from Sainsbury's recipe).

  • Beans are a key element of the English Breakfast. Like an avengers infinity stone, without beans present alongside sausage, bacon, eggs and hasbrowns, one would be unable to conquer any day fully.

    • Ha ha hash browns! Back to making my point about it now being an American breakfast. Invented in the USA in 1888. The 13th century gentry never had a sniff of those in the morning.
