How much wiser are you now?

Welcome back to another installment of Ben's five Friday food facts. In this one I'm sure you'll learn some stuff you never knew. I was certainly taken aback when I was doing the research for these facts. I was particularly interested in the hippo soup one...

Gorgonzola is how old?

Gorgonzola cheese supposedly dates all the way back to 879 BC. It was first introduced in the town of Gorgonzola in Italy. It's a veined Italian blue cheese which is salty and tangy.

How many pineapples grow on a plant a year?

A pineapple plant produces just one pineapple a year. They are incredibly cool looking plants. The best way to describe them would be like little rockets shooting out of the leaves below.

There are how many types of grape?

There are around 60 different species of grape, and more than 10,000 variants. Around 1,300 varieties are used for wine. Finding this out makes me really want to try all of these different types.

The world's first soup was made of what?

The world's first soup was made back in 6000 BC and was made of hippopotamus. I'm not sure this is something you would be able to order at your local restaurant in Croydon... Doesn't sound all that appealing does it?

Ice cream contains seaweed?

Many major ice cream companies use seaweed in their products as it acts as a thickening agent. Obviously, you don't taste the seaweed, but it's interesting to know it's there. So, just think about that next time you have a Magnum (other ice cream brands are available).
